| Travel back in time to the Kandy Kingdom with the Perahera Festival

“Perahera” means a grand procession or parade, and is also held in Colombo and Kataragama, but the Kandy Perahera Festival, held for two weeks from the new moon to the full moon in the month of Esala, is the largest in Sri Lanka, and you can enjoy a spectacular parade.
The relic containing the tooth of Buddha is placed on the back of a decorated elephant and paraded through the night streets of Kandy with dancers who inherit traditional music and court dance.
The Perahera consists of a whip, a flag bearer, a land official, a drummer, the head of the elephant house, a dancer, a deputy lay representative, the elephant of the Tooth Relic Temple carrying the tooth relic, a lay representative, a wes dance, the elephants of each temple, the representatives of each temple, and a palanquin. The parade of 60-100 gorgeously decorated elephants gathered from all over the country is a spectacular sight.
The dances performed in the royal court during the Kandy Dynasty incorporate folk dances from all over Sri Lanka, and come in a variety of styles, from the graceful dances of female dancers to the fast-paced, powerful battle dances of male dancers, and even fierce dances waving torches around. Another major attraction of the dances is the rhythm of the drums, and traditional drums of various sizes are used to suit the type of dance, livening up the festival.
This spectacular parade will make you feel like you’ve traveled back in time to the Dynasty.
